Cancer Cases in Under 50s Surged 79% Over Last 30 Years

Globally, cases of early-onset cancer– usually defined as cancer in adults aged 18-49– have increased 79.1% over a span of three decades (from 1990-2019), according to recent research. The number of early-onset cancer deaths also increased 27.7% over the same span of time.

This data comes from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study that includes information from 204 countries and regions. Researchers specifically looked at new cases, deaths, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for 29 different types of cancer.

Breast cancer accounted for the largest number of early-onset cancer cases, but early-onset nasopharyngeal and prostate cancers were the fastest growing. Higher income countries had the highest rates of early-onset cancers, but lower income countries had higher death rates.

Researchers still aren’t sure what is driving this cancer surge, but the study authors highlight “dietary risk factors (diet high in red meat, low in fruits, high in sodium and low in milk, etc), alcohol consumption and tobacco use” as main risk factors for early-onset cancer as well as physical inactivity.

Natural Plant Compound Inhibits Deadly, Multidrug-Resistant Fungi

A natural compound found in many plants appears to have the ability to inhibit the growth of drug-resistant Candida fungi, a new study has found. In lab tests, it blocked 90% of growth in four different Candida species, including C. auris, which is an emerging global health threat.

The compound in question is a water-soluble tannin known as PGG (pentagalloylglucose). It’s considered to be one of the most potent antioxidants in the tannins group and has previously been studied for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-viral, anti-diabetic, and antitumor properties.

In the most recent study, researchers found that PGG starved the growth of Candida rather than attacking it, which means it would not promote further development of drug resistance, something that commonly happens with existing antifungal medications.

These findings are still very preliminary but could be especially significant in the case of C. auris, an often multidrug-resistant fungus that kills an estimated 30-60% of those who become infected with it. PGG was found by the researchers in leaves of the Brazilian peppertree (an invasive weed in Florida), but it has also been reported in plants used in Chinese medicine.

Clean Clothes, Zero Harsh Chemicals

You can get brighter whites and stain-free clothing by using a natural, non-toxic laundry detergent.

Most laundry detergents contain chemicals like SLS, artificial dyes, and optical brighteners that are linked to serious health effects, including skin irritation. Many also make use of synthetic fragrances, which are linked to allergic reactions and other health concerns, to mask odors rather than getting rid of them. Truly Free is a company that does things differently by making a hypoallergenic and non-toxic laundry detergent that is highly effective. The formula is based around their cutting-edge plant-based Quadrasalt technology and is guaranteed to remove stains (and odors) without harming fabrics.

12 Foods That Contain Natural Digestive Enzymes

Enzymes are an important part of the digestive process, since specific types help to break down protein, fat, and carbs. The good news is that some foods naturally contain these enzymes– like the bromelain in pineapples that aids digestion of proteins. Two more tropical fruits, mango and papaya, contain amylases (mango) and papain (papaya), which help with carbs and protein, respectively. Raw honey is surprisingly rich in digestive enzymes, too, as are probiotic foods like sauerkraut, kefir, and kimchi. Kiwi, ginger, and bananas also make the list. (More)

Prioritize Enjoyment Over Achievement for Greater Happiness

Western culture is big on prioritizing achievements, particularly career-related ones, but this isn’t necessarily the best approach to a happy life. According to some new research conducted in three countries, putting enjoyment ahead of achievement is a recipe for better well-being, and those who especially prioritized freedom reported the best overall well-being. Of course, this doesn’t mean achievement is all bad, but activities like intentional relaxation and hobbies appear especially important for staying happy. (More)

Heavy Drinking Increases Fat Deposits Around Vital Organs

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol is known to have a negative impact on the heart, but researchers have still been working to determine exactly why that is. A new study adds to the information gathered so far by revealing that heavy alcohol consumption is associated with increased ectopic fat deposits– that is, fat around organs like the heart, liver, and intestine. Both consistently heavy drinking and binge drinking were linked to this type of fat, which is a risk factor for heart disease. (More)

Early Ovary Removal Likely Accelerates Aging, Health Problems

Hysterectomy is the second most common surgical operation for women (after cesarean delivery) with anywhere from 23-45% of women aged 40-59 having their ovaries removed at the same time as a precaution against ovarian cancer. But according to new research, premenopausal bilateral oophorectomy (PBO) may put women at higher risk of health problems like asthma, arthritis, and bone fractures and deserves more careful consideration. 12 Surprising Causes of a Cholesterol Spike

You probably know some of the more common causes of high cholesterol– like an unhealthy diet– but there are some other surprising triggers that can make your cholesterol “spike”. High levels of stress are enough to do this, and certain medications also elevate cholesterol. Eating a lot of sugar or drinking more than 3 cups of coffee per day may raise cholesterol, too. Health conditions like thyroid issues, liver or kidney problems, and type 2 diabetes can also be “culprits” behind high cholesterol. (More)

Compelling Health Fact

At any given time, most of your air flow goes in and out of one nostril, while the other one is much more constricted. (Try placing your thumb over each nostril to see which is which.) Scientists still aren’t sure why this happens, but they theorize it might improve our sense of smell.
